Barndominiums are a trendy option for house hunters who want a retreat. They're surprisingly affordable to buy or build, and they often offer residents the chance to get away from it all in a remote area.

What exactly is a barndominium? It's defined as an "oversized building that’s either a retrofitted barn-to-home conversion or an open-concept steel building constructed from the ground up."

They're often built in rural areas where there's plenty of wide-open space, but this type of rustic residence has also started popping up in areas closer to civilization.

And you don't need to break the bank to buy one. We searched listings nationwide and found five beautiful barndominiums—all priced below $400,000.

Price: $385,000 Everything but the horses: This barndominium is a true bargain because it offers revenue opportunities aplenty.

Painted in a vibrant shade of red, the residence contains three different-sized living units under one roof.

A new owner can live in the three-bedroom section and rent out the two other units.

The home just north of Houston sits on a corner acre lot full of shady trees and comes with a sport court for tenant recreation.

Built in 2018, the multiple units also offer short-term rental potential, as there are numerous wedding venues and a Renaissance festival in the area.

Price: $399,900 A lot of land: At first glance, the price for this one-bedroom, one-bathroom barndominium might seem high. Then it seems reasonable when you factor in the 100 acres of land, a giant shop and porch, covered RV parking and hookups, as well as a luxe chicken coop it comes with.

Living quarters include a loft-style apartment overlooking a giant great room that can be used for living space, entertaining, or tinkering on vehicles. The building is equipped with an oversized garage door.

Ideal as a hunting lodge, the secluded getaway sits atop the Bull Mountains in Central Montana with views of the Crazy and Snowy Mountains.

Price: $375,000 Barn and beach house? This three-bedroom residence looks like a ranch house, but it was built like a modern barn with an aluminum roof and siding.

It's located a block and a half from Lake Livingston, so it almost qualifies as a beach house.

It features covered porches that encourage you to sit and enjoy your surroundings. Inside, the open floor plan is highlighted by a farmhouse kitchen with stainless-steel appliances. There's also an office, hobby room, and spacious bedroom suite with a walk-in closet.

Price: $240,000 Work and play: It's one of the best work-from-home spaces that we've seen. This sprawling barndominium on 13.2 acres offers a 40-by-40-foot shop and an attached one-bedroom apartment.

It features commercial-grade, roll-up doors on either end and is wired for cable TV and internet. But if you're interested in a bigger division between work and leisure, there's space to construct a regular home—or a second barndominium.

All this, and an abundance of deer and turkey right outside your front door? You'd never have to leave, for work or play.

Price: $259,900 Paris pied-à-terre: Built just last year, this three-bedroom barndominium sits on an acre of land.

The 1,512-square-foot residence features an open floor plan with vinyl plank flooring throughout. The kitchen is equipped with stainless-steel appliances and an island for dining and storage.

Metal siding and roof plus a covered front porch running the length of the home complete this picture-perfect retreat in Paris.
