SANIBEL, Fla. — An adult mourning dove is recovering after officials found it trapped in a chicken coop on August 29.

According to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. (CROW), the dove suffered multiple puncture wounds and feather loss. Based on its injuries, CROW officials said the dove was likely attacked by the chickens in the coop.

CROW caretakers continued to closely monitor the dove. After a few days of treatment, the dove’s wounds began to heal, but its feathers weren’t growing back, according to CROW.

However, veterinarians said over the past week, noted the dove’s “pin feathers” were beginning to grow in. According to CROW, a pin feather is a developing feather which can grow in as a new feather to replace old ones or during infancy.

CCROW veterinarians said the dove will be able to move outside to continue its rehabilitation once more of its feathers grow back.
