MEDFORD, NY — A group of cats and chickens were rescued from a shed fire in Medford on Wednesday afternoon, Medford Fire Department officials said.

The shed fire broke out to the rear of a home on First Avenue just before noon, according to a post on the fire department's official Facebook page. When firefighters arrived, they found multiple sheds were involved and that the cats and chickens were trapped inside one of the sheds, the post read.

"The fire was swiftly knocked down, multiple chickens and cats were rescued," department officials said.

The Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshall's office is investigating, according to the department.

One chicken and a couple chicks did die as a result of the fire, though 16 others escaped without injury, according to a town spokesman.

Two cats that were in a large create were uninjured, he said.

Altogether three fire departments responded to the scene, including Holtsville and North Patchogue, officials said.
