Gypsy caravan at Greenslade Taylor Hunt collectors sale | Somerset County Gazette

INSTANTLY evoking the romance of the open road, this model of a gypsy vardo or caravan reflects not only a bygone era but also the immense pride taken by showfolk and travellers in their rolling living accommodation.

It is a ‘ledge’ type wagon, with the body extending out over the wheels, and is based on the full-size caravans built by Dunton & Sons in Reading, Berkshire, between the 1880s and 1920s.

Constructed to 1/12 scale entirely from scratch, and beautifully hand-painted, this van represents over 800 hours of painstaking work.

The details include steerable front wheels, working block brakes on the large rear wheels, a reversible chained chock, opening doors and sash windows, sliding louvred shutters, chicken coops, and a lift-off mollycroft roof revealing a neatly fitted interior.

It will be coming to rest, briefly, at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Collectors Sale, on Friday, September 16, where it carries an estimate of £200-£300.

“Our collectors sales continue to grow in popularity and we have an ongoing requirement for models of all descriptions for our international clientele,” said Dr Peter Rixon, head of the firm’s collectors department.

“Diecast vehicles and model railways are among our specialities and always sell well via our fully illustrated on-line catalogues”, he added.
