A Burlington couple and their pets managed to escape uninjured after a fire that started in a chicken coop spread to their house Monday.

At 3:46 p.m., crews with the Burlington Fire Department were called to a structure fire at 101 N Gunnison St.

When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home. Authorities say the fire started due to an overheated heat lamp in a chicken coop just outside of the house.

The home's residents, two cats and several chickens all escaped without injury, officials said.

The house sustained an estimated $45,000 in damages to the structure and $10,000 in contents, but was insured, according to a news release from the Burlington Fire Department.

Nine Burlington firefighters responded to the initial call and were assisted by eight West Burlington firefighters. Seven off duty Burlington firefighters were called to the scene for assistance. The Burlington Police Department and Alliant Energy also assisted in the response to the fire. Firefighter cleared the scene at 6:09 p.m.

President Biden has largely managed to avoid the fray of the Supreme Court reform debate in his first year in office by outsourcing the issue to an expert study group. But his time on the sidelines may be running out. Now that his court commission has wrapped up its work, and with a potentially explosive Supreme Court ruling on abortion expected this summer just months ahead of the midterms, Biden could soon find himself facing intense pressure...
